The Hitchin branch of Pitcher and Piano recently opened in the old Corn Exchange building on the market square and the interiors are a significant improvement on the previous bar that occupied the building (Que Pasa). It was our venue of choice one weekday evening for cocktails and dessert. I had a craving for a very naughty, sugary pudding; the doughnuts! They arrived warm in a paper bag (slightly unconventional presentation) next to a chocolate dip and a strawberry jam. The doughnuts were sweet but the hint of cinnamon lessened the sugar and they were extremely moreish. The chocolate sauce was disappointingly not as rich as it could have been, however the strawberry dip was significantly better than the strawberry jam I was expecting; a sauce like consistency and not too sweet (thankfully).
The ‘Basil Bramble’ cocktail was a delightful combination of Bombay Sapphire, blackberry, basil, apple and lemon, it had a kick but was well balanced. A perfect way to round off an evening.
