Burn’s Night at the Army and Navy Club

Last week we enjoyed a Burn’s themed night at the Army and Navy Club (aka The Rag) in London’s Pall Mall. The club’s Ribbon Bar and Terrace (which is quite modern compared to the rest of the club) had put on a special menu featuring haggis (of course) with neeps and tatties followed by a cranachan whisky cheesecake. A special selection of Scottish whiskies was also available. The cocktail list is worth mentioning too (quite a comprehensive selection) and over the course of the evening I opted for a refreshing Lime Daiquiri, ‘The Rag’ (an incredibly strong rum punch which the menu rightly advised should be drunk slowly!) and a Bramble. Now apologies to my Scottish friends, but haggis just isn’t my thing! However the hot smoked salmon with a tomato and beetroot salad, horseradish & a creamy dressing caught my eye on the menu and was absolutely delicious. Plus it was light enough to leave room for the pudding, which I had been looking forward to! I love cheesecake so couldn’t resist the ‘cranachan whisky cheesecake’ special – an interesting twist in honour of the occasion. The whisky flavour was subtle and not overpowering, and the cheesecake had a good texture. The addition of raspberry sorbet I particularly enjoyed – so refreshing, and raspberries happen to be my favourite fruit. It was an ideal end to a lovely evening.
